Local and regional government networks at the Post-2015 Summit

17 September 2015

The main international networks of local and regional government gather in New-York to celebrate the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

A delegation of around 60 local and regional government representatives is expected to attend the Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Agenda in New York, on 25-27 September 2015 with the aim of celebrating the constituency’s participation in the Post-2015 process and debating the role of local and regional governments in the implementation and monitoring of the Agenda.

Local and regional government leaders will have two slots to speak in official interactive dialogues of the Summit. Patricia Iglecias, Secretary of State for the Environment of the State of São Paulo, will represent nrg4SD at the session on “Fostering sustainable economic growth, transformation and promoting sustainable consumption and production”, while UCLG President and Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbaş, will make participate in the interactive dialogue on “Building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions”.

While access to UN formal meetings is expected to be very limited, a programme of side-events aimed specifically at local and regional governments has been organized by a range of partners from 24-29 September.

Saturday 26 September will see a debate on the localization of the SDGs, co-organized by UCLG, UNCDF and the Government of Uganda. This event will identify innovative models to strengthen capacities, governance, service delivery and the financial ability of local governments to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. It will also explore how to take these models to secondary cities, peri-urban and rural urban areas in the Least Developed Countries.

Sunday 27 September will be a particularly important day for the delegation. It will see a meeting of the Global Taskforce and its partners to discuss the way towards Habitat III, a joint event by the GTF and Cities Alliance on the New Urban Agenda, a political debate and declaration by the Global Taskforce, and a session of the United Nations Advisory Committee of Local Authorities (UNACLA).
