05 September 2017 —06 September 2017

UNGA High-level Meeting on the New Urban Agenda and UN-Habitat

From 5 to 6 of September 2017, a delegation of local and regional leaders and representatives of the networks of the Global Taskforce will attend the high-level meeting convened by the President of the UN General Assembly on the New Urban Agenda and UN-Habitat in New York.

The meeting is an opportunity to maintain momentum around the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and to reflect on the positioning of UN-Habitat in that regard.

The Global Taskforce delegation will include representatives of ICLEI, UCLG Asia Pacific, UCLG Africa, and CEMR, as well as UCLG President, Parks Tau. Tau was Co-Chair of the Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of UN-Habitat after the Adoption of the New Urban Agenda, whose report will be the focus of discussions at the meeting.

The Global Taskforce sees the Panel's report as an important first step in the debate on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the role of local and regional governments in the governance structures of UN-Habitat. The Global Taskforce's reactions to the report will be the subject of a joint statement at the meeting in New York.

Programme:

On Monday, 4 September, the networks of the Global Taskforce will hold a preparatory meeting to discuss and finalize the constituency's main messages on the central topics of the high-level event, including: mainstreaming urbanization across the UN, revitalizing global partnerships, and a regional perspective on the New Urban Agenda.

On Tuesday, 5 September, local leaders will participate in two interactive panels in the morning to review the positioning of UN-Habitat in the effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda. In the afternoon, the Global Taskforce will recall the importance of global partnerships for the implementation of the major development agendas at the “Stakeholder Consultation on the Report of the High Level Independent Panel to Assess and Enhance Effectiveness of UN-Habitat”. In the evening, UCLG will host a drinks reception by invitation at the ONE UN Hotel.

On Wednesday, 6 September, local leaders will participate in interactive panels on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs, with a focus on the role played by the UN and multistakeholder collaboration, respectively.

Finally, local and regional leaders will attend a lunch hosted by President of the UN General Assembly, Peter Thomson, and will have a meeting with UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to discuss the contributions of local and regional governments to the overall UN sustainable development agenda.
