Local and regional governments at PrepCom3 of Habitat III in Surabaya

21 June 2016

A delegation of the Global Taskforce will be in Surabaya from June 24 to 27 to share our feedback on the latest draft of the New Urban Agenda and to call for transformative changes to urban governance at Habitat III

The local and regional government networks of the Global Taskforce have published our feedback on the latest draft of the New Urban Agenda, published on 18 July. We celebrate the increased recognition of the role of local and regional governments in sustainable development, and the calls to strengthen sub-national capacities in financing, management, governance and planning.

However we also call for the Agenda to go further on urban governance, building on its call for decentralization based on the principle of subsidiarity. A failure to do so would represent a missed opportunity to use Habitat III to harness the transformative potential of urbanization to promote local democracy, social inclusion, human rights and sustainable development.

On Sunday 24 of July, the networks of the Global Taskforce will meet for a policy dialogue on Habitat III and its links with other major international agendas, particularly the SDGs.

On Monday 25 of July, the Global Taskforce will present our latest publication: Our Habitat III Journey, which brings together all local and regional government contributions to the Habitat III process. This event will be held at 17.15 at the Urban Speakers Corner.
